Is there a need to minister to single adults?
I teach a class on relationships which a majority of them are in the age bracket of 20-30 years old. I took a survey, asking the question, “Where did you learn about relationships, dating & sex?” It was astonishing that 75% of them learned from either TV, movies or an article in some type of magazine. Only 20% learned from their peers and 5 % learned from their parents. Not one person said they learned it from church, Sunday school or even the bible. This goes to show how so many of the young people these days are self-destructing in this area of their lives because the lack of Christian-based education they are receiving. They are going to the world for answers. And we wonder why so many people struggle so much in this area. It’s so true in Hosea 4:6 – My people are DESTROYED for lack of knowledge.
It is time for churches and Christian individuals to rise up to re-educate people in the areas of dating, relationships and sex. I would have to say churches are doing a good job with having some type of youth group to stand up for purity until marriage, but what about the single adults in their 20, 30 and even 40’s? These age groups need it more than ever! It’s never too late for anybody to stand up for purity again!
I have seen where churches have shut down their singles ministry because they don’t see a need in the church for it. But that is so far from the truth! There are about 50% of Americans that are married. That means the other half are either divorced, never married or widowed. That sure is a lot of people that needs ministering to!
I remember church was not attractive to me because it portrayed that family-oriented image. Since I was not married or had any children, I would feel secluded from their activities. I thank God that I started attending a church that had a singles ministry that would have activities for singles to feel as we were part of the church. Those 6 years of being part of the singles ministry helped me get a good foundation on the word of God and helped me deal with issues of being single.
What is your church doing for singles? Or better yet, what are you as an individual doing to help single adults in these days where purity is rare?
